Hampden Nicholas' father was Samuel Henry Sockett and his mother was Jane Pleasants Nicholas. His maternal grandparents were Hampden Bigelow Nicholas and Willie Sue Carrington. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Richard Carrington, Robert Carter, Samuel Henry, Alice, Lucy Holt and Willie Sue.
