Her paternal grandparents were Edmund Monroe Pendleton and Sarah Jane Thomas; her maternal grandparents were Samuel Austin Nelson and Anna Maria Mallory. She had a brother and a sister, named Philip Nelson and Maria Gertrude. She was the youngest of the three children.-
