Coleman was born on August 4th, 1780 in Culpeper Co., VA.  Coleman's father was Philip Pendleton and his mother was Martha Awbrey.  His paternal grandfather was James Pendleton; his maternal grandfather was Chandler Awbrey. He had six brothers and three sisters, named James, Philip, Robert, Gabriel, Henry, Joseph, Martha, Elizabeth and Rebecca.  He died at the age of 81 on May 31st, 1862 in Tallapoosa Co., Alabama.
