Edmund Gaines' father was James Pendleton and his mother was Sarah Bell. His paternal grandparents were Philip Pendleton and Martha Awbrey; his maternal grandfather was James Bell. He had seven brothers and five sisters, named James, David H., Robert, singleton, William Clayton, Alfred, Joseph, Patsy, Margaret Malinda, Dorcas, Minerva Jane and Harriett.
