James was born in Albemarle Co., VA. James' father was James Maury and his mother was Mary Walker. His paternal grandparents were Matthew Maury and Mary Anne Fontaine; his maternal grandparents were James Walker and Ann Tunstall Hill. He had six brothers and four sisters, named Leonard Hill, Walker, Abraham, Fontaine, Benjamin, Richard Lancelot, Anne, Mary, Catherine and Elizabeth. He died on February 23rd, 1840 in New York, New York.-
