A. J. was born about 1863. A. J.'s father was Henry Melvin Ladd and his mother was Rebecca Ladd. His paternal grandparents were John C. Ladd and Martha E. Mountcastle. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas N., Samuel W., Martha M. and Lucinda F.. He was the oldest of the five children.-
