Joseph Meriweather's father was James FitzAllen Jennings and his mother was Ann Elizabeth Duval. His paternal grandparents were William Jennings and Martha Elizabeth Duval; his maternal grandparents were Claiborne Lawson Duval and Jane Elizabeth Russell. He had four brothers and two sisters, named James Milton, Lee Ashby, Monroe, William Benjamin, Mariona and Martha Elizabeth.-
