Thomas Calthorpe was born on October 30th, 1838 in Buckingham Co., Virginia. Thomas Calthorpe's father was William Henry Howard and his mother was Sarah Catherine Duval. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Calthorpe Howard and Catherine Eliza Pope; his maternal grandparents were William Duval and Susan Browne Christian. He had five brothers and four sisters, named William DuVal, Charles Henry, Isaac Adams, Nathaniel Pope, Philip, Catherine Elizabeth, Frances, Susan and Nellie. He was the oldest of the ten children.-
