Lucy's father was Peachy Ridgeway Gilmer and her mother was Mary Meriwether. Her paternal grandparents were George Gilmer and Mary Peachy Walker. She had two brothers and three sisters, named George, Thomas Meriwether, Elizabeth Thornton, Frances Walker and Mary Peachy.
