Obediah was born on January 1st, 1794. Obediah's father was Joseph Duval and his mother was Elizabeth Sheppard. His paternal grandparents were Benjamin Duval and Anne Kay. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Benjamin, Joseph, Stephen, Robert Kay, Nancy, Elizabeth, Susannah and Sarah. He was the youngest of the nine children.-
