Jane's father was John Mercer Brockenbrough and her mother was Austina Brockenbrough. Her paternal grandparents were Moore Fauntleroy Brockenbrough and Sarah Waller Smith; her maternal grandparents were Austin Brockenbrough and Lettice Lee Fauntleroy. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Austin, Benjamin, Edward, Eugene, John Mercer, Sarah Roane and Tine. She had a half-brother named Samuel Richardson.-
