Benjamin's father was Thomas W. Brockenbrough and his mother was Sarah Wharton. His paternal grandparents were Arthur Spicer Brockenbrough and Lucy Gray. He had two brothers and two sisters, named George, James Cabell, Sally Maxwell and Mary Cabell.-
