Jonathan was born in 1720.  Jonathan's father was Marmaduke Beckwith and his mother was Elizabeth Brockenbrough.  His maternal grandparents were William Brockenbrough and Mary Newman. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Tarpley, Marmaduke, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Margaret and Mary. He had a half-brother named Metcalfe.
