Walter Quarles was born on February 1st, 1912. Walter Quarles' father was George Washington Armstrong and his mother was Etta Woodson Lawrence. His paternal grandparents were Zachariah Pulliam Armstrong and Willie Ann Amos; his maternal grandparents were William Quarles Lawrence and Mary Etta Woodson. He had six brothers and six sisters, named Saint George, Richard Quintus, David Pullium, ?, ?, John Wesley, Goldie Ann, Frances Otelia, Virginia Hope, ?, ? and ?. He was the seventh oldest of the thirteen children.-
