Ellen was born in 1869 in Ballarat, Victoria,Australia. Ellen's father was Benjamin Gahan and her mother is Hannah Elizabeth Todd. Her paternal grandfather is Benjamin Gahan and her paternal grandmother was Eliza Elizabeth Collingwood; her maternal grandparents are William Todd and Sarah Ann Musgrove. She had three brothers named George Thomas, George Thomas and Edward Henry Ben. She is the oldest of the four children.
