Esther was born in 1908 in BALLARAT EAST, Victoria, Australia.1  Esther's father was Arthur Ernest HUGHES and her mother was Martha Jane NICHOLSON.  Her paternal grandparents were Nathaniel Eden HUGHES and Sarah Judson REEVE; her maternal grandparents were William NICHOLSON and Ann FISHWICK. She had two brothers and a sister, named Arthur, Jack and Jessie.  She was the third oldest of the four children.
