Arthur was born in 1905 in BALLARAT EAST, Victoria, Australia.1  Arthur's father was Arthur Ernest HUGHES and his mother was Martha Jane NICHOLSON.  His paternal grandparents were Nathaniel Eden HUGHES and Sarah Judson REEVE; his maternal grandparents were William NICHOLSON and Ann FISHWICK. He had a brother and two sisters, named Jack, Esther and Jessie.  He was the oldest of the four children.
