Griffin was born in 1735 in Virginia, United States.  Griffin's father was John Lewis and his mother was Elizabeth Christopher.  His paternal grandparents were John Lewis and Martha Mary Garner; his maternal grandparents were Robert Christopher and Anne Christopher?. He had three brothers and a sister, named John, William, Corbin and Sarah.  He was the youngest of the five children.  He died in Virginia, United States.
