  • After Barney and Minnie were married against the wishes of the Smyth family, by a priest cousin of Barney Shannon, the newlyweds returned to the Smyth home to inform the family of the Happy Event and inform them that they also had booked passage to America, (Boston, Mass.) where some of the Shannon's had gone. Father Ed Smyth is said to have commented "that if you want my blessing you go and change your passage to New York and go to Rome, N.Y. where my brother John Smyth lives and he'll help you get started." Upon his first inkling of acceptance to the Shannon's, Minnie and Barney rearranged passage to New York (Probably Ellis Island - June- July or August 1888). This dispels my common belief that the Shannons entered America through Boston. Joe Moon.
