John F. was born in 1772 in Chatham, N. Carolina, USA.  John F.'s father was William B. Gamblin and his mother was Susanah (Sara) Cole Wells.  His paternal grandparents were William Gamblin and Mary Givan; his maternal grandparents were John Cole and Agnes (Aggie) Rayborn. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Joshua, Keziah, Sion, Sara, Mary and Martha.  He was the fifth oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 78 in 1850 in Mississipp, USA.
