John was born in 1778 in Gravenor.  John's father was Thomas Edwards and his mother was Elizabeth Griffiths.  His paternal grandfather was Edward Edwards and his paternal grandmother is (Mother); his maternal grandparents are Griffith Griffiths and (Mother). He had five brothers and a sister, named Thomas, William, Edward, Samuel, William and Margaret.  He is the second oldest of the seven children. He had five half-brothers and a half-sister, named Thomas, John, William, Edward, William and Margaret.
