Rogier Bernadus was born on September 25th, 1867. Rogier Bernadus' father was Rogier Bernadus Fredericus van Blerk and his mother was Elsie Magdalena Cornelia Nienaber (van Blerk). His paternal grandparents were Johannes Everhadus van Blerk and Catharina Cornelia Margeretha van den Berg (van Blerk). He had eight brothers named Jan Everhardus, Carl Petrus, Hendrik Everhardus, Petrus Cornelis, Frederik Andries Philipus, Carl Petrus, Alfred Johannes and Adriaan Christiaan.
