KOGELFONTEIN OR SCHUSTERS KRAAL

In May 1859 Johannes Frederick Wessels sold the then Schusters Kraal, which consisted of three components or lots of land, to Johannes Andries van Blerk. Johannes is the son of Nicolaas van Blerk and Louisa Johanna Cats. The name of the first component was Kogelfontein which bordered on the farm Wildschutbrand. Johannes retained the name Kogelfontein for components one and two. Component two was originally known as Eaton’s quitrent. Johannes and his descendants lived at Kogelfontein for 85 years and used or let component three (Schusters Kraal) for livestock grazing. Both farms, Wildschutbrand and Kogelfontein, held rights to a fountain which was on their border. In 1938 Samuel Nicholaas van Blerk sold the farm to George Frederick Le Sueur.

David Gabriel Malherbe, the owner of Wildschutbrand, married Johanna Jacoba Geertruida van Blerk, Nicolaas van Blerk’s, daughter from Elze River.

After the introduction of erf numbers between 1890 and 1904 the three components were consolidated into erf 798 which had an area of 449 morgen. In 1955 and 1961 portions of erf 798 were incorporated into the Good Hope Nature Reserve.

Scarborough, which was developed on component three, was designated as a conservation village in April 1996, defined as "a residential area of limited extent, surrounded by a conserved natural landscape, committed to reverse past environmental damage and to avoid future environmental impacts."
Red Hill Pottery can be found on Kilfinan Farm part of Kogelfontein and the old farm house on Wildschutbrand is now the Cape Farmhouse Restaurant. They are still working farms.
