Catharina Margaretha Johanna was born on May 30th, 1812 in Stellenbosch, Cape. Catharina Margaretha Johanna's father was Nicolaas van Blerk and her mother was Louisa Johanna Cats (van Blerk). Her paternal grandparents were Simon Petrus van Blerk and Johanna Margaretha Bergh (van Blerk); her maternal grandparents were Samuel Johs Cats and Cathariena Margareta van Coller. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Simon Petrus, Samuel Johannes Hendrikus, Johannes Andries, Nicolaas Johannes, Johanna Jacoba Geertruida and Louisa Johanna Petronella.
