Irene Louisa was born on March 6th, 1911. Irene Louisa's father was Jan Hendrik van Blerk and her mother was Elizabeth Johanna Pieterse (van Blerk). Her paternal grandparents were Rogier Bernadus van Blerk and Hester Maria Viljoen (van Blerk). She had three brothers and three sisters, named Bernardus, James, Marthinus Samuel, Sarah Mary Ann, Hester Maria and Judith. She was the third youngest of the seven children.-
