Jan Willem's father was Jan Willem Steensma and his mother was Johanna Scheubelina van Blerk (Steensma). His maternal grandparents were Rogier Bernhadus van Blerk and Martha Basina Dorothea van de Kaap. He had two brothers and a sister, named Adriaan Rosier, Rozier Bernardus and Philippina Magdalena.-
