Jan Barbard was born on June 21st, 1829. Jan Barbard's father was Jacobus Cornelius Coetzee and his mother was Susanna Catharina Magdalena van Blerk (Coetzee). His maternal grandparents were Jan Barend van Blerk and Maria Catharina van den Berg (van Blerk). He had two brothers and a sister, named Gert Lodewyk, Jacobus Cornelis and Maria Catharina.
