Ambrose was born in 1852 in Michelmersh, Hampshire.  Ambrose's father was Henry VERE and his mother was Harriet WREN.  His maternal grandparents were Joshua WREN and Charlotte NOYCE. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Frederick, Walter, Alice and Fanny.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
