Stephen was born in 1874 in Marden, Kent.  Stephen's father was Stephen STANLEY and his mother was Elizabeth Julia Ann.  His paternal grandparents were William STANLEY and Lucy BOORMAN. He had a brother and a sister, named Thomas Edgar and Lucy M.  He was the second oldest of the three children.
