John was born in 1831 in Boughton Monchelsea, Kent.  John's father was William MAY and his mother was Mary. He had three brothers and four sisters, named James, Edward, Isaack, Ann, Grace, Harriet and Sarah Jane.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
