Edward was born in 1833 in Boughton Monchelsea, Kent.  Edward's father was William MAY and his mother was Mary. He had three brothers and four sisters, named James, John, Isaack, Ann, Grace, Harriet and Sarah Jane.  He was the third youngest of the eight children.
