George was born in 1840 in Kidlington, Oxfordshire.  George's father was James GARDNER and his mother was Eliza.  His paternal grandparents were Edward GARDNER and Susanna SMITH. He had three brothers and three sisters, named James, Benjamin, David, Harriet, Emma and Alice.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.
