Benjamin was born in 1835 in Kidlington, Oxfordshire.  Benjamin's father was James GARDNER and his mother was Eliza.  His paternal grandparents were Edward GARDNER and Susanna SMITH. He had three brothers and three sisters, named James, George, David, Harriet, Emma and Alice.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 43 in 1878 in Headington District.
