Mary Ann was born in 1826 in Romsey, Hampshire, England.  Mary Ann's father was Martin EFFAMEY and her mother was Elizabeth HARDING.  Her paternal grandparents were Martin EFFEMEY and Mary CROCKER; her maternal grandparents were William HARDING and Hannah RAY. She had three brothers and five sisters, named Stephen, Martin, William, Jane, Fanny, Elizabeth, Betsey and Louisa.  She was the second youngest of the nine children.
