Thomas was born on October 1st, 1845 in Greenock, UK.  Thomas' father was Alexander CALDER and his mother was Mary DOUGLAS.  His paternal grandparents were Duncan CALDER and Margaret LAMONT. He had three brothers named Duncan, John and Alexander.  He was the second youngest of the four children.
