Alexander was born on April 10th, 1810 in Greenock, UK.  Alexander's father was Duncan CALDER and his mother was Margaret LAMONT.  His paternal grandparents were Duncan CALDER and Catherine MCCUNN; his maternal grandmother was Martha. He had two sisters named Martha and Catherine.  He was the youngest of the three children.
