Richard was born in 1838 in Bridgwater, Somerset, England.  Richard's father was James BOARD and his mother was Sarah.  His paternal grandparents were Richard BOARD and Mary. He had two brothers and three sisters, named James, William, Jane, Sarah and Susan.  He was the oldest of the six children.
