Gilbert was born in 1620.  Gilbert's father was Robert Bowman II and his mother was Sarah Orme.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Bowman I and Janet Smith. He had five brothers and two sisters, named William, Robert, Robert, William, John, Mary and Mary.  Gilbert and Mary were twins.
