Dow was born on June 18th, 1903. Dow's father was William H. Dow and her mother was Lucinda A. Edwards. Her paternal grandfather was Fred C. Dow and her paternal grandmother is Angie Drew; her maternal grandparents are Joseph Edward and Lizzie Fields. She had three brothers and a sister, named Fred, Dow, Vinal and Bernice. She was the third oldest of the five children.
