William Jay

Taken in 1923 in Howard, Kansas.

WILLIAM JAY IN 1923 & DOG PIEDMONT KS

William was born on November 7th, 1860 in Charleston (Peoria), Stark, Illlinois. William's father was William Jay and his mother was Eliza Jane Caylor. His paternal grandparents were William Jay and Ann King. He had three brothers and three sisters, named James, Robert, Emery, Catherine, Elizabeth and Martha. He was the youngest of the seven children. He died at the age of 66 on January 25th, 1927. He was buried in Forest Cemetery Elk County Kansas.

Death Notes
- "William Jay was a man who always had someone to take care of. He spent hours sitting with the critically ill. When he became ill he was doctored for the flu when a second doctor discovered he had a ruptured appendix and the infection was so great that nothing could be done to save him. (Louvina Anderson & Donald Simmons, Aug 1999)

- I forgot to say Grandpa Jay was dealer for 3K Medicine Company, selling spices, extracts, etc. to the farmers and rural people. (Wayne Johnston)
  
  Louvina Anderson: "William, his wife Nina, Children Ilah, Vera and Vida moved to Kaw County, OK. Here William Jay and his brother Robert S. Jay had a Trading Post on the Cherokee Strip, Indian Reservation. They Jay house was surrounded by a fence but the family was afraid of the Indians. One day one of the Indian braves jumped his horse over the fence and it was at that time William Jay decided to move his family back to Howard, Elk Co., Kansas. The brother stayed and became a wealthy man." 19 years old when he came to Kansas and located in Greenwood County. (Donald Simmons & Louvina Anders, 1999)
