Joseph was born on February 1st, 1645.  Joseph's father was Thomas Jay and his mother was Joan Gallop.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Jay and Frances Paulett. He had five brothers and a sister, named Samuel, John, Thomas, Ephraim, Ruth and Elizabeth.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
