John was born on December 13th, 1857.  John's father was Addison Moffett Clifford and his mother was Martha Emeline Jones.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Clifford and Susannah Wells; his maternal grandparents were Jones and Elizabeth Jones. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Francis, Joseph, Dora, Dora, Martha and Abigail.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
