Joseph was born on June 20th, 1782 in Rowan County, North Carolina.  Joseph's father was John Clifford and his mother was Rachel Gray.  His paternal grandparents were Michael Clifford, Sr. and Maiden Painter; his maternal grandparents were Joseph Gray and Sarah Eaton. He had a sister named Elizabeth.  He was the younger of the two children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named John, Michael and Jean.  He died at the age of 61 on February 23rd, 1844 in Davie County, NC.
