Ethel was born in January 1901 in Suffolk, Ipswich.  Ethel's father was Albert (Bertie) Arthur David Bridges and her mother was Mrs Elizabeth Mary Ann Coad.  Her paternal grandparents were Arthur Bridges and Elizabeth Fox; her maternal grandparents were  James Peter Coad and  Mary Ann Maryon.  She was the youngest of seven children.  She had five brothers and a sister, named Ernest, Wilfred, Frederick, Stanley, Charles and Mary.
