József's father was Mihály Asbóth and his mother was Katalin Molnár. He had two brothers and four sisters, named János, János, Erzsébet, Anna, Katalin and Julianna.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Mihály and Katalin.
