Joseph was born in 1813.  Joseph's father was Littleberry "Berry" Rutledge and his mother was M. Nancy Farmer.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Rutledge and Mary Paschal (Paschall); his maternal grandfather was James Farmer and his maternal grandmother is Elizabeth Harding. He had two brothers and six sisters, named James, Parthenia, Emily, Nancy, Martha, Elizabeth, Sarah and Harriet.  He died at the age of 53 in 1866.
