John was born on October 15th, 1839.  John's father was Johann Heinrich KROELL and his mother was Catherine Elizabetha Dietz.  His paternal grandparents were Johann Heinrich Krцll and Anna Elizabetha Lang; his maternal grandparents are Johann Adam Dietz and Anna Sybilla Eckel. He had three brothers and a sister, named Heinrich, Adam, Henry and Catharina.  He was the fourth oldest of the five children.
