Sunoto was born on July 25th, 1937.  Sunoto's father was R Mustotpo Pringgohardjo and his mother was Sujati.  His maternal grandparents were RM Tjitrodimedjo and Ny. Tjitrodimedjo. He had seven brothers and a sister, named Muhammad, KRT Muhammad , Sri Murtini, Drs Muhammad, Surjadi, Gatutsampurno, Purnomo and Sri .  He is the youngest of the nine children.
