Josepha was born on November 5th, 1704.  Josepha's father was Juan Goicoechea (Belaunca) and her mother was Ysabela Arezmendi (Aranguren).  Her paternal grandparents were Santiago Goicohechea (Uribarri) and Francisca Belaunca (Agirre). She had a brother and three sisters, named Juan , Francisca, Maria Cruz and Antonia.  She was the second youngest of the five children.
