Thomas was born in 1847 in Leyburn, North Yorkshire.  Thomas' father was Samuel Robinson and his mother was Arabella Matson.  His paternal grandfather is Thomas Robinson. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named William Robert, Elizabeth and Martha.
